Design Tips for Using Checkered Tile in Kitchen and Bathroom

Black and white checkered linoleum floors rose to popularity in the 1920s thanks to their affordability and upkeep. This pattern dates back more than two thousand years as it was originally used for games, to fend off negativity, and also to describe certain details in hieroglyphics. And it continues to be a trend today.

Checkered floors may sound like they belong in a retro diner, but they can be a contemporary, elegant or rustic choice. This style was initially made popular as a flooring choice for diners and restaurants. It really adds a sense of whimsy to any residential kitchen or bathroom as well, especially those with a retro style.
Polished checkered floors can be classic and elegant if designed properly. Classic black and white are the most popular flooring bathroom choice, but you have creative license to use any color combo that you wish.  Feel free to mix it up with any colors you prefer and fit well with your design.

Option 1: In The Kitchen
Backsplash
If you want to have the checkered look in the kitchen, you can incorporate it into your backsplash. When it comes to a luxurious and a very polished look, glass tiles are a fabulous material to use for your backsplash. For kitchens with an elegant design, patterned tiles with contrasting shades of grey, white and marble will provide contrast without overwhelming the design.

Flooring
Looking to give your new kitchen design a pop of style? Incorporate checkered flooring. In the last few years classic white and black checkered tile has made a comeback. In the design pictured below, you’ll notice the hexagon shaped tiles. This adds a modern flare to the classic checkered look.
Design Tip 1: If you’re leaning toward a more traditional style and also want durability, then porcelain tiles might be the best option. The rich patterns of porcelain will create interest, without making it appear quite as dramatic as the other options.

Design Tip 2: If the goal is a softer or more eclectic feel, add splashes of pastel colors to complete the aesthetic.

Option #2: In The Bathroom
No matter what your favorite style is, you can’t deny that black and white bathroomshave an ageless appeal. If you love the black and white flooring, then it would be a perfect choice for your bathroom design. This design option is a guaranteed winner if you’re looking to update your bathroom.

White is the standard color choice for bathroom fixtures like sinks, toilets, and baths. However, when it comes to floor tiles, there is a greater variety of choices, with black and white always being a strong choice. This classic combo has many advantages as it will likely never go out of style. It matches well with any wall color, and it is neutral enough that most buyers will appreciate it. Black and white also leaves your new bathroom feeling crisp and clean.

A timeless hexagonal or octagonal floor tile pattern is a contemporary and stunning choice for a bathroom design. You can create flow in your bathroom with a simple checkerboard pattern. This style creates a sense of movement. Black and white always gives your bathroom design a sense of elegance and a touch of drama that works in perfect harmony.
Design Tip 3: If you want a more dramatic look, install your tiles on a 45 degree angle or use hexagon or octagon patterns.
The use of subtle black and white floor tiles paired with subway tile, a classic vanity, and colorful walls will give your bathroom a timeless design. Checkered floor tiles are very affordable and are frequently found at home improvement stores. In addition, there are many styles from which to choose in that color scheme.

You can use checkered tiling to give your design a classic and elegant look that is affordable and durable. Use our guide to inspire your next choice for your tiling.

4 Tips from the Pros About Choosing Grout Color

It’s always exciting to pick out new tile for your bathroom or kitchen. It’s easy to get stressed when looking through tile samples because your tile choice will have a big impact in your home. When choosing tiles, the grout color is often overlooked. It is important because it can make or break the aesthetic of your tile and the overall look of your room. Here are four things to consider to help you choose the right grout color for your tile aesthetic.

1. When Using White Tile with White Grout…

When white tile is paired with white grout, the lines between the tile and grout will disappear. The entire surface will blend together to give a uniform aesthetic. When you enter a kitchen or bathroom with white tiles and grout, you’re sure to notice a number of things, but it’s unlikely that one of those things is going to be the actual tile.  The all white tile and grout doesn’t draw attention like other tiles and grout.
This is a perfect option when you do not want your tile to be a stand-out feature in your renovations. Usually this option works best with modern spaces that have dramatic design flair somewhere else in the space. This option is also great when renovating a small bathroom because it makes your space appear larger.

Please keep in mind that white or light grout are not forgiving to discolorations or stains, so it will definitely take extra upkeep to maintain that pristine appearance.

2. When Using White Tile with Dark Grout…
When you use dark grout, the grout becomes the focus of the tile. The patterns of the tile start to create a bolder aesthetic for your renovation. In the photo below, notice how pronounced the octagon tiles appear with dark grout.
Even with a simple subway tile pattern, going dark with your grout will add contrast and make the tile pop out more. Once you begin to add contrast between the grout and tile, the actual shape of your tile is exposed and the grout itself forms a pattern.  Naturally, the tile and grout contrast is better suited when black and white are the dominant hues.

3. When Using Black or Colored Tile…
If you decide to stray away from the stark white tile look, pairing vibrant or black tile with the right grout hue is a bit trickier. The previous rules are essentially the same when you’re dealing with black or colored tile. A light grout will make your tile pattern stand out and add even more interest. If you choose a dark or black tile, a grey or charcoal shade of grout will create a softer look.

4. Consider Grout Size…
Grout size is almost as important as the look of the tile. Depending on how you choose to space the tiles, the grout line can either disappear or stand out.  The tighter the tile spacing, the more the grout lines will become virtually so small that they appear to disappear. Another factor is the shape of the tile and how it will affect the grout lines. This is especially true with circular tiles. So, if you choose a tile that will require a tight grout size you should choose a shade closer to the tile color.

The color of your grout will impact your tile aesthetic and the overall look of your room. Consider these four tips from the pros when choosing your grout color.

How to Choose the Right Lighting for Your Bathroom Remodel

Get The Right Lighting for Your Bathroom Remodel
Getting ready for work can be particularly tough if you have the wrong lighting or inadequate lighting in your bathroom. A good bathroom design should include multiple light sources. When you’re choosing lighting for your bathroom remodel, you’ll have several options depending on size, layout and style.  Two bathroom light sources to consider are sconces and mounted fixtures. With both source there are various options, below we will discuss the various options for each category.

About Sconces:
The light from your sconce should softly illuminate the room, but still be bright enough for grooming and applying makeup. The shade of your sconce is very important because the transparency and hue affect how light is emitted into your space.

The primary location to install sconce is on either side of your vanity mirror. This design provides the perfect lighting for your sink area. The general rule is for your sconces to be mounted anywhere between 65 and 70 inches away from the floor to be at eye level; allowing for light to illuminate without casting shadows.

If you have a small space to work with but love the style of sconces, take into consideration how far away from the shower/bath will the sconces be located.  If they are located so close that a risk of having contact with water is highly likely, then you should consider finding sconces that have a “damp” rating to be sure that it’s secure to get wet.

Mounted Fixtures:
Sconces can illuminate an entire bathroom if the bathroom is small enough.  However, if your bathroom is larger you still might need additional light sources.  Such as mounted fixtures, recessed lights, track lighting, and ceiling fixtures.

If the space is narrow then you should mount fixtures on either side of the wall.  This style of illumination can still be effective but will still allow your design to maximize the size of your mirror.  While mounted fixtures on either side of your mirror are considered to be the best choice for casting light evenly across the face, although mounting fixtures above the mirror is still a one of the most popular design choices.

Reliant on the size and position of your vanity and mirror it might be impractical to do otherwise.  If you have no choice but to mount your lighting above the mirror please note that it should have a higher wattage bulb and be at least 75 to 80 inches to be in the best position for the light to fall evenly over the sink.

Another example of mounted fixtures is the three lights over a larger vanity.  This is an illustration of a fixture with multiple shades.  This style fixture is available in multiple sizes, allowing for your designer to size the fixture in relation with the width of the mirror.  It’s challenging to have excessive light in a bathroom, so don’t cut corners on larger fixtures if your space can accommodate them.

Remodeling your bathroom means you’ll have several lighting options. We hope this information about mounted fixtures and scones will help you make the right choice.

5 Low Budget Upgrades to Make Your Bathroom Amazing

Renting or owning a home in DMV means you have a lot of things to consider about your home. Many of these things you will have no choice over, such as square footage, but one thing you shouldn’t have to tolerate is a bad bathroom. Even if you can’t afford to have a full bathroom renovation or switch out the old tub or replace tile, there are ample changes you can make without emptying your wallet.

5 Low Budget Upgrades to Make Your DMV Bathroom Amazing

When making any major renovations or remodels you should always consider your motivation, how much you are willing to spend, and the expected return on your investment.
If you plan to stay in your home long-term and you are renovating for personal use. If this is the case, than the value you receive in return will not be monetary, but rather an emotional one. This style project will enhance your lifestyle and for this type of project you should spend money on materials you love and appreciate.

Upgrade #1: Change Your Shower Head
Replacing your shower head to a more updated, efficient, and modern shower head will have a huge impact on the aesthetic as well as the functionality of your bathroom. This a fairly easy do-it-yourself project. And, although it may seem daunting, it’s actually a very easy project.

Upgrade #2: Replace the Mirror
We hardly give a second thought to standard mirrors and medicine cabinets. A mundane rectangular mirror will certainly get the job done, but mirrors are such an enormous part of our daily lives and routines. We tend to take them for granted outside of their functional uses. By using an attention-grabbing mirror, you can change the whole look of your bathroom.

Upgrade #3: Change Your Vanity
If you’re thinking about giving your bathroom a makeover, but not sure where to start, consider a fresh new vanity design. Vanities are the central feature of the room and are a great way to quickly change its whole look. Like any type of design, trends run in and out of style. Below, you can see some hot trends in bathroom vanities that have grown in popularity and will remain relevant for years to come.
The easiest way to make a statement is to choose a black or dark vanity. It creates an eye-catching and unique contrast to a natural decor and can make all-white bathrooms feel less sterile and more modern.
Modern vanities are characterized as having sharp lines and simple drawer fixtures. A modern design tries to create something that is visually pleasing and equivalently functional. Smooth surfaces make it easy to keep your bathroom clean with a simple wipe down.

Upgrade #4: Update Sink or Faucets
If you’re opting to keep your existing sink and only updating your faucets, you’ll find somewhat limited choices. This is because the new faucet you choose will need to fit into the existing sink and it will also need to complement the other fixtures in the room.
Once you narrow down the silhouette, the next choice is the finish. This choice will depend on your style. If you prefer traditional, you may opt for chrome. Looking for something with a little more style? Try a bronze finish.

Upgrade #5: Hang Shelves
Shelves have doubled the benefit in terms of bathroom upgrades. Not only are they are affordable and fairly easy to install, they also add to the aesthetic. Shelves draw the eye and give you a place to store bathroom necessities like towels and soaps.

Whether you rent or own your DMV home, you can make small high-impact changes that fit your budget to make your bathroom amazing.

Looks We Love: Masculine Bathrooms

If you are considering a bathroom remodel, try and give some thought to thinking outside the box this time around!  Often times our bath, bedroom, and kitchen ideas trend toward a more feminine approach, as traditionally, women have been the primary driving factors in renovating these parts of our homes.

Gender stereotypes are quickly becoming a thing of the past, and decorating styles are increasingly welcoming of more masculine styling cues.  Subway tiles, dark, rich colors, heavier wood pieces, and more durable surfaces can add a different, dramatic, fresh change to a dated bath.

Here are 6 examples of what many would consider a “Masculine Bathroom.”  We hope you find these photos inspiring and perfect for your city dwelling:
1.  Bold stripes, leather, wood, steamer trunks, oversized mirror

2.  Exposed brick, copper, unfinished wood

3.  Heavy wood details, masculine black fixtures, nautical themed artwork and finishes

4.  Simple, clean, white walls, oversized lighting fixtures, dark accented mirrors, heavy marble

5.  Metal and wood finishes, turn-of-the-century inspired industrial age fixtures and wash basin supports

6.  Rough-hewn wood beams, exposed aged brickwork, simple fabrics, and antlers!

Strong, dark colors often create a more dramatic and bold look to both big and small spaces.  Elegance does not have to be traditionally delicate and refined.

Enjoy!

8 Creative Small Bathroom Ideas

Every now and then, you may find that your fantastic Manhattan abode could do with some sprucing up, and that the typically small bathroom that comes with it must follow suit.

When space is at a premium, you could always do with a few tips to get your creative juices flowing. To that end, we’ve compiled a short list of creative small bathroom ideas that all property owners in Maryland, DC or Virginia could take on board for their projects.
1. Open-base Washstand

Console washstands are not only charmingly reminiscent of days of yore, but they are also far more practical than the classic pedestal sink. They come in many shapes and sizes, but one that is extremely popular with all those looking for hard-wearing yet sumptuous toilets is the marble countertop washstand, with stainless steel tubing that doubles up as towel rail.

Designer Elyssa Albert managed to combine opulent marble with polished stainless steel for a truly dazzling effect. Whatever the size of the bathroom, there should be plenty of legroom thanks to this Gramercy washstand.
2. Oval Sink

The inventors of the ingrain wallpaper, Germans have a way with small spaces, and bathrooms are no exception. In nature, every inch of space is poised to deliver optimum utility, and that’s specifically what the designers at Burgbad, in Germany, hoped to achieve with their Pli sink.

This oval wash basin is not only a breath of fresh air in a room dominated by lines and geometric patterns, but also a space saving alternative to bulky conventional sinks and other conventional small bathroom ideas.
3. Open-base table

We all love a good read with a long bath. And what better way to store and showcase a book, a candle, a chilled glass of sherry, and a pair of reading glasses than an open-base table beside the tub?

That urge for bathroom design that keeps essentials close at hand in the smallest of spaces is precisely what the crew at RCG must have had in mind when they designed this open-base bathroom table. Tasteful yet functional, this sine qua non of small bathroom furniture can store your essentials on its stainless metal top, as well as underneath.
4. Eye-level Storage

Whatever the size of your bathroom, towel racks should be an essential feature. This Cotswold manor’s master bathroom seems infinitely larger than it really is thanks to the way Sims Hilditch designers configured its storage units.

Notice that there are no cabinets, the washstand is open-base, the bathrobes are stored in a wall recess, and the towels are neatly displayed on racks that double as radiators. There is ample space in the center to fit a bathtub, so that even bathrooms half this size would still be clutter-free. What’s more, of all the ways to bring ingenious bathroom design to life, this one would probably be the least expensive to apply.
5. Wall Tile

A bathroom is only as spacious as its walls make you believe it is, and bathroom design should focus on wall decorations. The illusion of space can easily be achieved with tiles in light, warm colors, and with horizontal stripes, wavy lines, mosaics, and even damask, checkered or harlequin patterns. Ceramic wall tiles in single colors can have a similar effect, and have a more fluid pattern.

While most Porcelanosa ceramic tile designs are only appropriate for public buildings and large commercial areas, this particular pattern, the Creta Caliza, would work very well with small bathroom design. Coupled with free-standing taps and ovoidal pedestal wash basins, the rich texture on the walls would make an otherwise small bathroom seem optically impressive in terms of size.
6. Free-standing Bathtub

Claw-foot tubs never run out of style, but they do go out of fashion. Italian designers Rexa blend the charming curves and lines of a claw-foot tub with the generous storage space of a library headboard, serving as base, to create the Egg Tub, which is part of their Unico collection. Not only is this a fantastic example of a small bathroom idea, but it also comes in whimsical colors to boot, akin to an Easter egg.
7. Large Mirror

There’s only so much a mirror can stretch over a tiny vanity, and that’s why tailored mirrors make exceptional small bathroom ideas. An art glass studio in France called Sans Soucie (‘No Worries’) makes saving every last inch of space its specialty, and the results reflect this dogma for bathroom design that produces optimum utility.
8. Geometric floor tiles

Featured in Ideal Homes, this harlequin floor tile pattern is part of the Odyssey Collection by Original Style, UK. The small, light and dark grey squares on a cream backdrop create the illusion of space and remind us of lively Venetian masquerades. There are various other fantastic patterns that have a similar effect, including checkered, paisley, floral and large mosaic designs, and small bathroom ideas should never disregard these options.
